WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENIN' IN THE 'HOOD?

  • West Salem Neighborhood serves at Green Street Church Wednesday night "Welcome Table." Over 120 neighbors were served delicious Moravian Chicken Pie, Green Beans (provided by Arbor Acres), Salads, and desserts (provided by WSNA) by 10 neighborhood volunteers. This annual event is one that everybody enjoys!

  • Music in the Park, Sunday, August 21, 2005. West Salem enjoyed the music of Dante's Roadhouse, a trio of southern rock guitarist who entertained us.

  • National Night Out, Tuesday, August 2, 2005. Over 100 neighbors showed up in Granville Park for National Night Out, an annual nationwide event when neighborhoods come together to show their unity in the fight against crime. The West Salem Neighborhood Watch and the West Salem Neighborhood Association sponsored the event and served a hot dog supper to all who attended. There was even an old fashion watermelon spitting contest with prizes for the winners. A fun evening!!

  • Music in the Park, Sunday, July 18, 2005 featured NEW BREED and smooth Motown, beach and blues.

  • Music in the Park, Sunday, June 19, 2005 featured Old Time and Blue Grass music with dozens of bluegrass & old time musicians jamming -- not even the lightening and thunder and rain dampened their spirits. And a crowd of over 100 neighbors showed up to enjoy the music.

  • Fourth annual WINTER HOLIDAY GATHERING, Decemer 6, 2004, Christ Moravian Church fellowship hall, Academy and Granville.

  • NATIONAL NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHT OUT sponsored by the West Salem Civic Club. Located in Granville Park, this important event was Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at 6 PM and included games and refreshments, including a Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest.

  • MUSIC IN THE PARK - third Sunday of each month during the temperate months. Fun, Food, Music! Join us at 7 p.m. for an evening sure to please. Different music each month, from ole timey, to jazz, gospel, and more!

  • Third annual WINTER HOLIDAY GATHERING, December 1, 2003, Christ Moravian Church fellowship hall, Academy and Granville.
  • Second annual C3 FESTIVAL: CELEBRATE CULTURES AND COMMUNITY, May 24, 2003, held at Christ Moravian Church grounds, Academy and Granville.

  • STONE SOUP in Granville Park, was held Saturday, April 12, 2003.

  • FIRST POTLUCK SUPPER was held for new neighbors at the home of Barry Lyons and Mike Anthony. About two dozen new and old neighbors particiapted in a good time!

  • The first of MONTHLY STREET CLEANUP/NEIGHBORHOOD FELLOWSHIP was held February 1, 2003, and about a dozen neighbors gathered and cleaned Broad and Academy. The first Saturday of each month has been designated for this effort. March 1, was rained out, but the rain date of March 8, was a glorious spring day, and 10 neighbors gathered to clean Green Street.

  • Second annual WINTER HOLIDAY GATHERING held December 2002 at the fellowship hall of Christ Moravian Church, Academy and Granville.

  • Prepared and served NEIGHBORHOOD SUPPER for Green Street United Methodist Church on Wednesday May 22, 2002. This was the last Wednesday night dinner until the fall. There was a large crowd, and we all had a great time!

  • Held West Salem Holiday Gathering December 10, 2002 in Christ Moravian Church Fellowship Hall.

  • Working with the West Salem Civic Club to achieve Historical Status for West Salem.

  • Hold Weekend Neighborhood Watch gatherings on Broad Street across from Mr. Song's CITGO, except in the dead of winter!

  • Participated in the production of THE FIRST NEIGHBORHOOD DIVERSITY FESTIVAL C3: Cultivate Cultures and Communities. This festival, held at the Christ Moravian Church located at Green and Academy, was the result of collaboration between the Downtown Middle School and the West Salem neighborhood, May 11, 2002

  • PARTICIPATED in the September 14 city-wide vigil in memory of the September 11, 2001 tragedy.

  • FIRST WINTER HOLIDAY GATHERING - December 2001

  • CHRISTMAS CAROLING in the Neighborhood - December 2001

  • SUPPORTED West End neighborhood in their battle with the YMCA to preserve their historic homes.

  • SUPPORTED Grassy Creek in their fight to minimize the landfill expansion.

  • Participated in the "BIG SWEEP" cleanup of Tanners Creek.

  • PARTICIPATED in the Tanner's Creek initiative to become part of the stream restoration project.

  • Since 2000, we've PARTICIPATED in the Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful bulb planting project.
