West Salem, Downtown Living with a Small Town Feel!

Downtown Grocery

Have you heard about the plans for the new downtown grocery? Now is the time to learn all about it and get in on the planning. The first meeting was on January 22, 2006. Here is the newsletter reporting the results of the first meeting.

NEXT MEETING:

Sunday, February 13, 3 PM, at the Werehouse, 211 East Third Street

Following are details for this meeting:

GROCERY COOPERATIVE HOLDS SECOND MEETING

Featuring Deep Roots Market Speakers

To build on the overwhelming outpour of community support for a cooperative grocery market in downtown Winston-Salem, we are bringing two guest speakers from Greensboro's Deep Roots Market to discuss cooperative grocery operation at a public meeting at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 at The Werehouse, 211 E. Third St.

Chris Roland, produce manager for Deep Roots Market, a cooperative natural foods grocery that opened in 1976, will discuss the challenges of starting and running a cooperative grocery.  Megan Maurillo, who supervises marketing and membership services for Deep Roots, will also share her insights during the meeting.  Roland and Maurillo will participate in a question and answer session.

We will provide a brief introduction at the meeting and will also outline objectives for Downtown Grocery.  An essential goal of this community-wide meeting will be to identify a core group of interested people who are willing to contribute time and effort to the cooperative project.

This will be the second public meeting held to discuss the possibility of creating a downtown cooperative grocery in Winston-Salem.  The first meeting, January 22, drew almost 60 people to The Werehouse, and we are looking forward to welcoming more attendees.
